The Libertarian Party of Louisiana (LPL) was founded in 1972. It has had ballot access in Louisiana since a law changed in 2004, allowing the LPL to become an official party in Louisiana. Since 2006, candidates have been able to run for office with "Libertarian" printed on the ballot next to their name (rather than "other" as before) and registered voters have had the option of choosing the Libertarian Party as a pre-printed choice on their voter registration forms. Since 2006, registered Libertarians are designated by LBT on their registration cards rather than OTHER which is used for non-recognized parties.

Membership

The Libertarian Party of Louisiana gained official party status in 2006. Since then, registered voters have been able to choose the Libertarian Party as a pre-printed choice when registering to vote, instead of having to write the party name in. As of May 30th 2017, the Libertarian Party of Louisiana has 14,330 registered voters. As of May, 2017, 201 national dues paying members reside in Louisiana. State membership dues are presently $25.

Walking Liberty Award

This award recognizes an outstanding individual who rises above the crowd by personally spreading the Libertarian message through personal contact with more citizens and voters than anyone else. There is no requirement that it be given on a periodic basis, and is only awarded when someone meets the standard set by the inaugural recipient, T. Lee Horne, III. The award itself is a current year proof version of the Silver American Eagle[1] coin with the "Walking Liberty" design.

  • Martin Wade Justice of the Peace, Ward 10, District 4, Lafourche Parish. Elected on October 14, 2017. [2]
  • Randall T Hayes, Alderman, Village of Atlanta, Louisiana, 2012-2016. Randall Hayes won uncontested.
  • Michael Riffe, Alderman, Village of Sikes, Louisiana, 2012-2016. Michael Riffe won uncontested.
  • Gregory King, Lincoln Justice of the Peace Ward 3, 2013-2019. Gregory King won uncontested.
  • Chad Ivery Perry, Calcasieu Justice of the Peace Ward 7, 2014-2020. Chad Perry is the 1st Louisiana Libertarian to win a runoff election in a Louisiana jungle primary. Chad Perry won 52% to Danny Landry(D) 48%.
  • William McBride, Washington, LA Town Council District 3, 2014-2018. William McBride is the 1st Louisiana Libertarian to win a primary election. William McBride won 58.70% to Laura Budden(R) 41.30%.
  • Justin Bonnette, Vernon Justice of the Peace Ward 6, 2014-2018. Justin Bonnette won uncontested.
  • Henry Herford, Franklin Constable of JOP District 1, 2014-2018. Henry Herford won uncontested.
  • Historically noteworthy. We had 19 Libertarian candidates running in Louisiana for the November 2014 election. Randall Lord, running for US House, Louisiana Congressional District 4, received the top Libertarian voter percentage in US federal elections with 26.56% and 55,224 votes.
