The Libertarian Party of California is the California affiliate of the Libertarian Party. Just as California is the most populous state in the United States, it also has the largest number of registered Libertarians, and the most Libertarian Party members, of any state. As of 2025, about 1% of the voters in California (about 230,000 people) are registered Libertarian, and roughly 10% of the national LP's sustaining members are in California.

Historically, some of the most active local groups in California have been in Alameda, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, and Santa Clara counties.

"The Party exists to uphold, promote, and disseminate the philosophy and principles of libertarianism. To that end, it shall proclaim and implement the Statement of Principles of the national Libertarian Party ..."[1]

History

Early History

California was one of the earliest state affiliates, being recognized some time in 1972. (This affiliation was unsuccessfully challenged at the LNC Meeting 25 November 1972.) The first state convention was held in 1973. Up until 1980 the LP was not a "qualified party" under California election law, so Libertarians who ran for partisan office appeared on the ballot as independent candidates.

Membership and Vote Registration

The general term "member" has been used at various points in the LPCA's history to refer to a number of different kinds of connection with the LPCA.

California voters may register as affiliated with a political party. The LP is the 4th largest party in the state by registration, after Democratic, Republican, and American Independent. Libertarian registration increased about 40% from the 2016 to the 2020 presidential election, and by 2021 the count of registered Libertarians was over 200,000.

Individuals qualify to vote on Libertarian Party business at the state and county level by (1) certifying that they oppose the initiation of force to achieve political or social goals, (2) paying dues, and (3) not being registered to vote with any other party. The term used for this status is "Central Committee Member".

People who pay dues but do not qualify as central committee members because they have not signed the certification or because they are registered to vote with another party are referred to in a number of ways, as "associate members", as "non-voting members", as part of the more general class of "dues-paying members", or simply as "contributors".
