One of the hardest candidate types to find out about is when the candidate is the ''de jure'' or at least ''de facto'' nominee but was kept off of the ballot when ballot access efforts were unsuccessful. Or worst of all, the candidate was trying to run as an independent and/or write-in and the petition effort was unsuccessful, which -- short of a mention in a searchable archived newspaper or someone being able to remember -- may already be lost to recorded history.
