Russell Means was an Oglala Lakota activist, author, actor, and politician from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. He was a prominent member of the American Indian Movement (AIM), becoming its first National Director.[1]
In 1987, Means ran for President of the United States, seeking the Libertarian Party nomination in the 1988 election. He would finish as the runner up at the 1987 National Convention, losing the nomination to Ron Paul.

Legacy
The Libertarian Party of Arapahoe County named its activist of the year award after Russell Means.[3]
