William Schmidt was involved in the Libertarian Party in the 1970s. He was involved in the campaigns of Guy Riggs and Sandy Cohen. Later, he ran for and was elected to the Peekskill City Council in 1997 and 2001 as a Republican. In 2007, he ran for Mayor of Peekskill on the Republican, Conservative, Independence, and Libertarian lines.

In the late 2010s, he got more involved in the Libertarian Party of New York. In May 2019, he was elected Secretary of the Free Libertarian, Party Inc., the corporate body of the state party that remained separate from the Interim State Committee of the political party. He served in that position until his resignation on November 1, 2019.

Schmidt was involved in the Westchester County Libertarian Party, serving as Treasurer (2020-2021), Vice-Chair (2021-2022), and Chair (2022-2023). During this time, he was the LPNY's candidate for Comptroller during the 2022 election when Larry Sharpe mounted his second campaign for governor. The slate ultimatley did not get enough signatures to get on the ballot. The Westchester affiliate later disbanded until Rajib Maitra began reviving it, until it was ultiamtely joined with Libertarians in neighboring Putnam county to form the Westchester-Putnam Libertarian Party in 2025, in which Schmidt was elected Seretary.

Since 2021, Schmidt has served as a member of the Libertarian Party of New York State Committee, representing Judicial District 9. From 2022 to 2024, he served as a Member-At-Large of the Executive Committee.
