The 2020 Libertarian National Convention is the upcoming biannual Libertarian Party National Convention. It was initially scheduled to held on Memorial Day weekend (21-25 May) in Austin, Texas but has since been bifurcated into a two part convention with a Presidential ticket nomination slated for nomination between May 22-24 and the other half postponed and transferred to Orlando, Florida for July 8-12.[1]

Overview

The 2020 Convention will include consideration of proposals to amend the Libertarian Party bylaws, consideration of amendments to the Libertarian Party Platform, and election of national officers and other members of the Libertarian National Committee.

Additionally, delegates to the Convention will nominate candidates for President and Vice-President to run on the Libertarian Party ticket in the 2020 United States Presidential election.

Delegates are selected by each of the state affiliates of the Libertarian Party.

The event is also expected to include seminars, forums, debates, discussion groups, and an exhibition hall as indicated by the Request for Proposal.

Location

The three finalist cities for the convention location were:

  • Atlanta, Georgia
  • Austin, Texas
  • Phoenix, Arizona.

The location chosen was the Austin JW Marriott.

On April 26, 2020, the JW Marriott cancelled the convention's reservation due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.[2] The convention was instead bifurcated into a two part convention with a Presidential ticket nomination slated for May 22 and the other half postponed and transferred to Orlando, Florida for July 8-12.[3]

May 23 Nomination

Candidates must receive 30 tokens by May 23 in order to be listed on the presidential nomination ballot and must receive over 50% plus one of the delegates votes in order to secure the nomination.[14]

NOTA is a candidate on all ballots.[15]
