National Convention
The 1979 Libertarian National Convention was held in Los Angeles. In a tight race, Ed Clark for the party nomination over Bill Hunscher. David Koch recieved the nod for Vice President.
State Parties
- The Libertarian Party of California earned permanen ballot status with more than 80,000 voters registering Libertarian.
- The Libertarian Party of Wisconsin got on the ballot for the first time as a party by petitioning 10% of those who had voted in the last gubernatorial campaign in 10 different counties.
- The Libertarian Party of Michigan elected James Hudler once again as its state chair.
