Blay Tarnoff is a longtime Libertarian Party activist, having joined in 1990. He served a number of roles on the State Committee of the Libertarian Party of New York including Chair (1995—1996), Vice-Chair (1998—2002), Secretary (2005—2007; 2011—2019), and as a Member-At-Large (2004—2005). He is the current chair of the Nassau County Libertarian Party.

Since around 2007 or 2008, he has been Chair of the Nassau County Libertarian Party. In 2019, he was elected Chair of the County Committee, which is separate from the Executive Committee.

He is married to Caryn Cohen and is the father of Randyn Tarnoff.
