The Libertarian Party of Santa Clara County is a county organization of the Libertarian Party of California. Santa Clara County covers much of the area known as "Silicon Valley". The largest city is San Jose. Other cities include Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, Mountain View, Milpitas, Palo Alto, and Cupertino.

The Libertarian Party of Santa Clara County is a county affiliate of the Libertarian Party of California.
Libertarians have been active in Santa Clara County since the very earliest days of the LP, and the county group includes among its members two former National Chairs.  There were Libertarians from Santa Clara County on the November ballot both for Congress and the state legislature every two years from 1980 (when the LPC gained ballot status) until the enactment of the "Top Two" primary system. Libertarians have run for many local non-partisan offices in Santa Clara County, and several have been elected -- and some re-elected.

Activities in recent years have included outreach booths at public events, providing arguments in the county voter pamphlet opposing tax and bond measures, running radio ads opposing items on the ballot, participating in parades, holding an informal monthly coffee meeting open to the public, and making public statements providing a libertarian perspective on actions being considered by local governments.

Executive Committee
There has been at least one local Libertarian candidate for Congress on the ballot in the past four primary elections (2016-2022), and in most of those years also at least one candidate for the state legislature. (But in this area under "Top Two" the November ballot typically ends up offering only two Democrats for such offices.) In 2018 local Libertarians also ran for positions on the city councils of San Jose and Mountain View and in 2020 one Libertarian ran for a school board position and one was re-elected to the board of a local water district (all non-partisan offices).

Region Numbers
Santa Clara County was Region 43 of the Libertarian Party of California in the numbering system in which regions generally corresponded to counties.
Santa Clara County was Region 7 in the earlier 20-region numbering system.
Past Executive Committees
The LP of Santa Clara County Executive Committee includes ten permanent "officer" positions: Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, and the chairs of six standing committees defined in the bylaws: Activities, Campaigns, Fundraising, Membership, Newsletter, and Publicity.  Other committee chairs may from time to time be given voting status on the Executive Committee by approval of the Central Committee. In addition, up until the early 2000s the county's representative on the state Executive Committee was also a member of the county Executive Committee. (After that time individual counties no longer had direct representation on the state Executive Committee.)
Partial terms are noted when known, but there may have been other mid-term resignations or appointments not documented here.

Candidates for Public Office
This section lists candidates who ran for public office in districts in (or partly in) Santa Clara County. (For statewide offices, see Libertarian Party of California Historical Election Results.)
Note that because of redistricting after each census, the set of districts that overlap with the county changes every ten years.  Following are the districts that were in (or partly in) Santa Clara County during the years in which Libertarians ran for office:

In the tables below, the column labeled "Rank / N" shows the vote rank of the Libertarian and the number of candidates who appeared on the ballot. For example "3 / 4" means that there were four candidates on the ballot for that office and that the Libertarian candidate came in third.
For Congress, the state legislature, and Board of Equalization, under the primary system used starting in 2012 all candidates for a given office ran against each other regardless of party affiliation, and only the two candidates who received the largest number of votes (in most cases two Democrats) appeared on the November ballot. In cases where a Libertarian ran for one of these offices but did not appear on the November ballot for this reason, the results from the primary are shown instead. These cases are marked with a pink background.

Voter Registration Statistics
The number of registered Libertarians in Santa Clara County has shown a significant increase recently. The count of 8,331 as of the most recent Report of Registration published by the Secretary of State is an all-time record, and about 45% higher than at the corresponding point four years earlier. But as a fraction of all registered voters this is still pretty low. The Libertarian fraction in Santa Clara County was higher than the statewide average for most of the LP's history, but in recent years it has been lower.

Comparison With Other Parties
More than half of all voters in Santa Clara County are registered Democratic. The Republican Party has only about 1/3 as many. The second-largest group of voters is independents ("no party preference"). Among the smaller parties, American Independent has the largest count, but this is widely believed to be just a result of voters not knowing what it represents, and thinking they are signing up as independent voters. The Green Party and the Peace and Freedom Party each have much smaller numbers of registrants than the LP.

General Information
Jurisdiction: Santa Clara County, California
Status: Active
Officers
Chair: Joe Dehn
Vice-Chair: Mark Hinkle
Secretary: Brian Holtz
Treasurer: Alan Kaiser

The Libertarian Party of Santa Clara County is a county organization of the Libertarian Party of California. Santa Clara County covers much of the area known as "Silicon Valley". The largest city is San Jose. Other cities include Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, Mountain View, Milpitas, Palo Alto, and Cupertino.

Meeting Minutes

This section needs to be expanded and moved to a separate article.

Years Congress State Senate State Assembly BOE
2022- 16, 17, 18, 19 10, 13, 15 23, 24, 25, 26, 28, 29 2
2012-2020 17, 18, 19, 20 10, 13, 15, 17 24, 25, 27, 28, 29, 30 2
2002-2010 11, 14, 15, 16 10, 11, 13, 15 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 27, 28 1
1992-2000 13, 14, 15, 16 10, 11, 13, 15 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 28 1
1984-1990 10, 12, 13 11, 12, 13, 17 18, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 1
1982[1] 10, 11, 12, 13 12 18, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 3
1980 10, 12, 13 11, 12 21, 22, 23, 24, 25

Notes relating to candidate tables:

 1. The initial post-1980-census redistricting was rejected by referendum and redone for 1984.
 2. There was a contested primary which Laursen won, but Webster then filed as a write-in candidate for November.
 3. This race had a large number of write-in votes, but the Statement of Vote did not break them down by county.

Counts and percentages as of 23 May 2022 from the most recent Report of Registration from the Secretary of State:

Party Count Fraction
Democratic 510,260 50.93%
Republican 165,604 16.53%
American Independent 25,215 2.52%
Libertarian 8,331 0.83%
Peace and Freedom 4,263 0.43%
Green 3,786 0.38%
"other" (mostly defunct parties) 3,003 0.30%
"unknown" 240 0.02%
"no party preference" (independent) 281,089 28.06%
