General Information
Jurisdiction: Santa Clara County, California
Status: Active
Officers
Chair: Jennifer Imhoff-Dousharm
Vice-Chair: Mark Hinkle
Secretary: Kimberly Davis
Treasurer: Robert Imhoff-Dousharm

The Libertarian Party of Santa Clara County is a county affiliate of the Libertarian Party of California. Santa Clara County covers much of the area known as "Silicon Valley". The largest city is San Jose. Other cities include Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, Mountain View, Milpitas, Palo Alto, and Cupertino.

Libertarians have been active in Santa Clara County since the very earliest days of the LP, and the county group includes among its members two former National Chairs. There were Libertarians from Santa Clara County on the November ballot both for Congress and the state legislature every two years from 1980 (when the LPC gained ballot status) until the enactment of the "Top Two" primary system. Libertarians have run for many local offices in Santa Clara County, and several have been elected -- and some re-elected.

History

Region Numbers

Santa Clara County was Region 43 of the Libertarian Party of California in the numbering system in which regions generally corresponded to counties.

Santa Clara County was Region 7 in the earlier 20-region numbering system.

Past Executive Committees

The LP of Santa Clara County Executive Committee includes ten permanent "officer" positions: Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, and the chairs of six standing committees defined in the bylaws: Activities, Campaigns, Fundraising, Membership, Newsletter, and Publicity. Other committee chairs may from time to time be given voting status on the Executive Committee by approval of the Central Committee. In addition, up until the early 2000s the county's representative on the state Executive Committee was also a member of the county Executive Committee. (After that time individual counties no longer had direct representation on the state Executive Committee.)

Partial terms are noted when known, but there may have been other mid-term resignations or appointments not documented here.

Candidates for Public Office

This section lists candidates who ran for public office in districts in (or partly in) Santa Clara County. (For statewide offices, see Libertarian Party of California Historical Election Results.)

Note that because of redistricting after each census, the set of districts that overlap with the county changes every ten years. Following are the districts that were in (or partly in) Santa Clara County during the years in which Libertarians ran for office:

Years Congress State Senate State Assembly BOE
2012-2020 17, 18, 19, 20 10, 13, 15, 17 24, 25, 27, 28, 29, 30 2
2002-2010 11, 14, 15, 16 10, 11, 13, 15 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 27, 28 1
1992-2000 13, 14, 15, 16 10, 11, 13, 15 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 28 1
1984-1990 10, 12, 13 11, 12, 13, 17 18, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 1
1982[1] 10, 11, 12, 13 12 18, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 3
1980 10, 12, 13 11, 12 21, 22, 23, 24, 25

In the tables below, the column labeled "Rank / N" shows the vote rank of the Libertarian and the number of candidates who appeared on the ballot. For example "3 / 4" means that there were four candidates on the ballot for that office and that the Libertarian candidate came in third.

For Congress, the state legislature, and Board of Equalization, under the primary system used starting in 2012 all candidates for a given office ran against each other regardless of party affiliation, and only the two candidates who received the largest number of votes (in most cases two Democrats) appeared on the November ballot. In cases where a Libertarian ran for one of these offices but did not appear on the November ballot for this reason, the results from the primary are shown instead. These cases are marked with a pink background.

Notes relating to candidate tables:

  1. The initial post-1980-census redistricting was rejected by referendum and redone for 1984.
  2. There was a contested primary which Laursen won, but Webster then filed as a write-in candidate for November.
  3. This race had a large number of write-in votes, but the Statement of Vote did not break them down by county.
