[[David Nolan]] related that the below announcement from [[Richard Nixon]] on August 15, 1971 was the straw that broke the camel's back that caused them to finally decided to start the new party. Ironically at the time the announcement came over the TV, the initial group was meeting at his home to talk about this decision.
