The number of registered Libertarians in Santa Clara County has shown a significant increase recently. The count of 7822 as of the most recent Report of Registration published by the Secretary of State is an all-time record, and about 34% higher than at the corresponding point just before the previous presidential election. But as a fraction of all registered voters this is still pretty low. The Libertarian fraction in Santa Clara County was higher than the statewide average for most of the LP's history, but in recent years it has been lower. | |||

Close to half of all voters in Santa Clara County are registered Democratic. The Republican Party has only about 1/3 as many. The second-largest group of voters is independents ("no party preference"). Among the smaller parties, American Independent has the largest count, but this is widely believed to be just a result of voters not knowing what it represents, and thinking they are signing up as independent voters. The Green Party and the Peace and Freedom Party each have fewer than half the number of registrants as the LP. | |||
