Brian Frederick McLaughlin (January 18, 1975 – February 25, 2025) was a respected sports journalist, youth soccer coach, historian, and longtime member and donor of the Libertarian Party and the Libertarian Party of Florida. Known for his passion for storytelling and dedication to community sports, he was also remembered for his leadership within the party and his thoughtful, policy-driven approach to politics.
Biography
Brian McLaughlin was born at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Camp LeJeune, North Carolina, to Steven Marc McLaughlin and Kathleen Brady McLaughlin (née Beutell). His early life reflected his father’s military service, living at several Marine Corps bases before the family settled in the Carolinas and later in Florida. He graduated from Leesburg High School in 1993, where he served as the commencement speaker and represented his school at the American Legion Boys State in 1992.
McLaughlin attended the University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications, one of the nation’s leading journalism programs. While still a student, he wrote for publications including The Gainesville Sun, the Daily Commercial, and The Independent Florida Alligator. After earning his degree, he built a distinguished career covering high school and college sports for outlets such as the Tallahassee Democrat, the Daytona Beach News-Journal, Sporting News, Parade Magazine, Athlon Sports, and Hero Sports. His insightful writing on college recruiting and prep athletics earned him national recognition, and he helped identify early stars such as Johnny Manziel and Trey Burke.
Professional Career and Community Involvement
McLaughlin’s passion for sports extended beyond journalism. He coached youth soccer for more than a decade with the Florida Celtic Soccer Club and served on its Board of Directors. He was a fixture at Palm Harbor University High School games, known for his trademark notebook on the sidelines and for capturing the excitement of local youth sports in vivid, community-focused stories.
In addition to his professional and volunteer work, McLaughlin served as Chair of the Libertarian Party of Pinellas County in 2017 and contributed to the Libertarian National Committee as a campaign communications director. A self-described political scientist, he valued policy, strategy, and civil discourse, focusing on solutions rather than partisanship.
Personal Life
Brian married Lori Sue DeLand on July 28, 2001, at St. Paul Catholic Church in Leesburg, Florida. The couple made their home in Palm Harbor and had three children: Kaitlyn Susan, Tristan Calvin, and Kirstyn Anne. He was deeply devoted to his family, often weaving stories about them into conversations with friends and colleagues.
Outside of journalism, McLaughlin had a lifelong interest in history and genealogy. He meticulously researched his family lineage dating back to the 1600s, compiled family archives, and organized major reunions connecting hundreds of relatives across generations.
Death and Legacy
Brian McLaughlin passed away unexpectedly on February 25, 2025, at Mease Countryside Hospital in Safety Harbor, Florida, surrounded by his family. He was 50 years old.
The Palm Harbor community mourned his loss, honoring him as both a gifted storyteller and a compassionate leader whose dedication enriched countless lives. A GoFundMe campaign was established in his memory to support his family.
His life exemplified the values of integrity, service, and intellectual curiosity. Within the Libertarian movement, he was known as a steady voice for reason and principle; within his community, he was celebrated as the chronicler of its athletes and the heart behind its stories.
