The pledge is a statement that all people must agree to in order to join the Libertarian Party. It reads, "I certify that I do not believe in or advocate the initiation of force as a means of achieving political or social goals."

According to some anarcho-capitalists, this does not necessarily preclude violent action to overthrow the government, because government initiated force by imposing taxes; therefore, revolutionary acts are simply self-defense. Anarcho-capitalists further argue that initiatives such as the Fairtax are a violation of the pledge, because force would need to be initiated in order to collect the Fairtax (as with any other tax).
