Brianna Coyle (born January 27, 2001) is a former Libertarian activist. She arrived into the liberty movement in 2018, and was heavily involved within the Libertarian Party until she left on May 30, 2022, following the completion of the Mises Caucus takeover.

Biography

Brianna Coyle was born on January 27, 2001 in New York City and raised there. Prior to any involvement with the Libertarian Party, she was known in her circles for being an avid animal welfare activist, intersectional feminist, and later pursued youth rights advocacy.

Personal Life

Outside of politics, Coyle is an aspiring writer and filmmaker.[1] She takes heavy inspiration from various subcultures. Some of her hobbies and favorite things include anime, video games, trading card games, website design, photography, and betta breeding.

Libertarian Party

Brianna had served within the Libertarian Party in multiple capacities by volunteering on the local, state, and national level. She was a dues paying member of several LP-affiliated organizations throughout her time in the party.

This began in late 2018, when Coyle became involved with the party shortly after Larry Sharpe's gubernatorial campaign in New York state.

In April, Coyle created the blog titled The Liberal Libertarian[2] , which served the purpose to spread libertarian messaging in a way understood by the mainstream "left". Initially its purpose was to outreach to classical and modern liberals, but has since considered tapping into the further reaches of the libertarian-left as well. While it has a small following, its reception has been mostly positive from people both within and outside the party.

Coyle attended the 2020 National Convention as a delegate, openly supporting Vermin Supreme as the Presidential nominee. She later became heavily involved with Thomas Quiter's State Senate race, which became one of the most well-performing Libertarian campaigns of that level in the state.

In 2021, Brianna was listed as an Honorable Mention in the Feminists for Liberty video contest.[3]

On June 19, 2022, Coyle announced on Facebook that she had left the Libertarian Party.[4] She later joined the Democratic Party.

Inner-Party Conflicts

Coyle was a fierce critic of the Libertarian Party Mises Caucus, and had been openly dubbed as a public enemy of the caucus by every major figure affiliated with the organization. During the 2022 National Convention, she was interviewed by Reason Magazine for their documentary titled, “Inside the Mises Caucus Takeover of the Libertarian Party”.[5] She was also briefly quoted in a NY Sun article on the same topic.[6]

Coyle had been a vocal opponent of the Mises Caucus, citing their refusal to dissociate from alt-righters. She had been a subject of targeted harassment from Mises Caucus affiliated members on social media from 2019-2022, and intended to leave the party regardless of the results of the 2022 convention elections.

On multiple occasions, she referred to the "Reno Reset" as a rebirth of Rothbard and Rockwell’s paleo strategy,[7] which aimed to create a fusionist ideology between paleo-conservatism and libertarianism.

Coyle’s other criticisms of the Libertarian Party include her claim that the party has a long-standing culture that is too tolerant of bigotry, harassment, and other forms of unprofessional and illegal behavior. She believes that the bystanders who refused to stand against the toxicity are to blame, and are complicit in enabling a hostile internal culture by fostering anti-accountability practices, therefore contributing to the problem.

Post-Libertarian Party

After her exit from the Libertarian Party and registering as a Democrat, Brianna joined other organizations that she felt better represented her values, such as the Democratic Freedom Caucus and the Center for New Liberalism. She became disillusioned with the idea of third party politics in general, insisting that it’s a waste of time with very little payoff. Beyond her changed sentiment, she believes that the threats posed by the MAGA-run GOP are too great to ignore, and firmly believes that the best chance of stopping the rise of far-right authoritarianism in the country is by supporting the Democratic Party.

Philosophical Views

Brianna spent several years informally studying political philosophies such as liberalism, libertarianism, and anarchism. As a young adult, she often wrote commentary on theory, notably subscribing to the concept of thick libertarianism and condemning state reductionist points of view. She enjoys reading the works of contemporary thinkers who write for think tanks such as Mercatus Center, Progressive Policy Institute, Center for a Stateless Society, Cato Institute, and Niskanen Center, or publications such as Bleeding Heart Libertarians and The UnPopulist. She also enjoys the work of historical thinkers such as Henry George and Thomas Paine.
