As with many delibertative bodies, it has been the practice of the Libertarian National Committee to adopt Resolutions concerning a variety of subjects. These can be divided into two main groups.

Resolutions Concerning Public Policy

The LNC has adopted many resolutions declaring a position in favor of or in opposition to legislation, military action, and similar matters. These are typically on subjects already covered in some sense by the Platform, but are adopted because members of the LNC believe it to be helpful to make a more specific statement. Reasons for this may include bringing a subject to the attention of the membership, clarifying how a Platform plank applies to a particular question currently in the news, facilitating mention in news media of the Party's position, and as a form of outreach to other groups concerned about the issue.

Resolutions Concerning Internal Policies

As part of its responsibility to manage the affairs of the Party, the LNC is continually making decisions about its own operations and management of the headquarters and staff. In the early years, internal policy decisions intended to have ongoing effect were typically expressed in the form of a resolution. Starting in the 1990s, the use of stand-alone resolutions for this purpose has largely been replaced by the practice of explicitly amending the LNC Policy Manual.
