John Locke was a 17th century English philosopher. His "First Treatise on Government" disproved the divine right of monarchs to rule. His "Second Treatise on Government" presents the case for individual liberty and outlines a government based on self-defense. It is by far his most famous work. John Locke also advocated religious freedom in "A Letter Concerning Toleration" and gave home-schooling advice in "Some Thoughts Concerning Education".
