Hoover Institution

The Hoover Institution is located at Stanford University, in California. It was founded in 1918 as a library of documents from the First World War collected by Stanford alumnus Herbert Hoover (later President of the United States). Over the years it grew into an extensive library and archives along with a think tank of scholars in fields such as history, economics, political science, and national security. Its long-time identification as the "Hoover Institution on War, Revolution, and Peace" reflected its founder's hope that the study of the causes of political violence could lead to an understanding of how to achieve peace. It currently identifies its theme as "Ideas Defining a Free Society".
