A Zillion Users

I note that this wiki has 1,120,520 users, most of them spam. Bummer. My wiki has 213,073 users and has not allowed any edits since April 2010. How do you disable user creation? Pstudier 00:18, 14 May 2015 (UTC)

... And that's not really what I'm wanting here -- it was an act of desperation that's been almost impossible to get undone, nevermind fixing the underlying vulnerabilities that led to it (LPedia.org was getting more than 100 new garbage articles and accounts per minute, which completely overwhelmed the bot I created to deal with the earlier, still bad, level of deluge.).
In LocalSettings.php add $wgGroupPermissions['*']['createaccount'] = false;
I'm not sure if this is the exact way it's don on LPedia.org as I do not have access to anything server side and never have. I'm trying to figure out how to ask how to get the LNC staff to allow it to be migrated to a different hosting arrangement, as they completely do not have the time to do anything for LPedia.org and never really have.
What is the current URL for Libertarianwiki? You sent me files to attempt to get a editable mirror up and running but I was unsuccessful and can't find them anymore.
Are you on Facebook? There's now a Libertarian Party History group that may or may not be worth your time. It isn't getting a lot of traffic right now, and mostly from me, but there are several other interested members of the group who mostly are lacking a spare moment. https://www.facebook.com/groups/LPHistory/

I was getting 100 new users a day. I tried to disable new users, but didn't do it right, and then got frustrated. Haven't done any work like this in a long time, new computer, can't get old tools to work, etc. So I deleted everything. Had second thoughts and undeleted my database.
Keeping up on things including updating Mediawiki is a real pain. Probably the way to go is with a Wiki Hosting Service.
As for me, I have not been active politically for the last several years. There were two wikis that took my content and both are defunct now. Since you show an interest, and I feel that I owe it to the editors not to lose their data, I will restore the wiki. It will be at libertarianwiki.paulstudier.com. Pstudier 00:58, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
The LP does not take LPedia seriously. I can find no links to it on the LP website. Too bad, it could be a good tool.Pstudier 01:05, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
This wiki also is fairly prominent in search engines, which is part of why it's been heavily targeted. I've found anonymous attackers to be far less problematic than account-creating ones, and right now LPedia is under control with anonymous edits still permitted. WHUMP bans anonymous IPs for 180 days, which causes most of the attacking botnets to run out of IP addresses.
I still believe that we need a less PR-implied wiki, possibly also with a more contemporary focus, in addition to LPedia. Libertarianwiki served both roles.
As for hosting I have some experience but need to get back up to speed. Four out of five space wikis (six if you include the closed off restricted access one) I'm partly responsible for need to be upgraded and get new extensions installed. I'm still better able to do that than the LNC staff.
Thank you for putting Libertarianwiki back up even if only as a static historical repository. My offer to try to get an editable version up still stands, although a different volunteer willing to keep it public domain may succeed faster. I could also certainly be on a team of people working on it.

Still working to restore LibertarianWiki. I should have just disabled it instead of deleting it. I intend to put the site somewhere search engines can't find it. Is your dimensionality.com email still valid? Pstudier 03:26, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
Yes it is. Ask me in 1997 if I expected to still have my new email address 18 years later... -- Strangelv 03:25, 17 May 2015 (UTC)
