A graduate of Dartmouth College and recipient of a Harvard law degree, [[Edward Clark]] received 400,000 votes, about 5% of the popular vote, in his 1978 run for the California governorship. In 1980, he was the [[Libertarian Party|Libertarian]] presidential nominee. Clark espoused a position he entitled "low tax liberalism", causing a split within the party, and was an activist against Selective Service registration and the arms race.

Clark received over 900,000 votes, about 1% of the popular vote, and gathered over 11% of the popular vote in Alaska, nearly half the vote total in that state for the Democratic ticket of Jimmy Carter and Walter Mondale.
