In between various National Conventions, the LNC is the highest governing authority in the Libertarian Party. Its members also serve as the Board of Directors for the Libertarian National Committee, Inc.

It is composed of the 5 at-large members elected at national convention, the four party officers, and the various regional representatives duly selected.

Serves as the national Judicial Committee for the party. It is composed of 7 non-LNC members elected by national convention every 4 years.

It has the power to overrule decisions of the LNC on appeal.

The precursor to the modern Libertarian Party was the Committee to Organize a Libertarian Party. It was formed to study the feasibility of creating a Libertarian Party within the United States.

It is unknown how many members served on the Committee and who they were.

The Committee dissolved in 1971 with the foundation of the Libertarian Party.

The Steering Committee was the first governing body of the Libertarian Party. It consisted of 7 members presumably appointed by the Committee to Organize a Libertarian Party.

It dissolved itself in 1972 to give way to the Temporary Executive Committee.

The short-lived Temporary Executive Committee was the governing body of the Libertarian Party from February 1972 until June 1972 where the first national convention elected its first LNC.

Members of the Temporary Executive Committee were appointed by the Steering Committee on a regional basis. Though 8 regions were drawn out, it is unclear if some regions had more representation on the committee than others as at 2 members are listed for some regions. Additionally, no member was listed for Region 7.
