The 1972 Platform was the first Platform approved by an LP national convention. Building on the Temporary Platform distributed as part of the organizing effort that led to the first convention, it included planks on many issues that are still relevant today, and a basic structure that lasted for many decades.

It was the first to include the Statement of Principles, by that name and with wording very close to what we still have today.

Other notable positions included the repeal of all laws creating "crimes without victims", opposition to all forms of censorship, support of the right to own gold (which was illegal at the time), opposition to the draft, and support of the right of secession.
