Porter ran for New York State Assembly for District 109 three times (2012, 2018, and 2020). In 2015, he ran for Albany County Legislature. In 2018, he ran for Albany County Executive.


On March 11, 2021, Porter was elected Vice-Chair of the [[Albany County Libertarian Party]]. He served until June 30, 2021, when he became Chair following the resignation of [[Daniel Sanchez]]. He continued to serve as Chair until December 2, 2021, when he was succeeded by [[Jay Carr]]. He also ran for Albany Common Council in 2021.
