The Connecticut Citizens Defense League (CCDL) formed in February, 2009 in response to a perceived lack of focus from existing gun rights groups in defense of the right to open carry and to fight against local pistol permit requirements that exceed the state requirements.[1][2] CCDL is playing a key role in the lawsuit challenging the gun legislation passed in the aftermath of the 2012 murders at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT.[3] It has a very pro-active approach to growing its membership and recruits at nearly all gun dealerships and shooting ranges in the state. As of June, 2016 it had 23,135 members.[4]
CCDL President and co-founder Scott Wilson was the keynote speaker at the 2013 Connecticut Libertarian Party annual convention.[5]
