History

The Libertarian Party of Michigan was founded in June 1972. Its first state chair was Stuart Weiner, who was soon succeeded by either Jeffery Doan or founding vice-chair Bill Krebaum. Weiner and Doan were both students at the University of Michigan.

In March, 1988, the Rev. James Walter Clifton was elected to the Addison Village Council. Winning the election made him the first Libertarian elected to public office in a partisan race in the state of Michigan. He had been serving on the Village Council for 6 months prior to the election while filling a vacancy.[2]

Awards

The Defender of Liberty Awards, also known as Libbies, are given every year at the banquet to a maximum of four recipients. These recipients are determined to have acted in the defense of liberty and may or may not even be in the Libertarian Party.
