Short grew up in San Dimas, California, a then-small town along the remnants of Route 66. His college days included stints at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN and Whittier College in Whittier, CA. He is a past Program Director with San Diego Comic Con (1982-86), and owned 21st Century Comics in Orange County, CA from 1986-2004. | |||
Through his paternal grandmother, Barry traces his American roots to John Alden of the Mayflower. He is a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, with at least four Revolutionary War patriot ancestors, including his 4th great-grandfather Thomas Leland Jr., who took part in the battle of Lexington. He is a 2nd cousin (7x removed) to President John Adams. He is also a fifth cousin (3x removed) to John Brown, whose execution by the federal government arguably incited the Civil War. | |||
