Commentary
Donald Trump has been an example of how Conservatism and Libertarianism possess a symbiotic relationship in modern politics. During his time as President, Trump has moved away from the anti-libertarian and anti-constitution interpretist trend in Supreme Court appointments, choosing the elevate firm Constiutionalists like Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett. Along with this, President Trump has embraced the Libertarians of his party, politicians like Nikki Haley, Lindsey Graham and more importantly Rand Paul who has had a tremendous influence on the president, a example of this would be how Paul pushed Trump to pass the tax reform bill that lowered the tax burden for nearly 80 percent of Americans.
Trump's libertarian record however is not all clean, far from it, Trump has consistantly pushed against pacifism and instead had opted to increase Military spending. Not only this but he also persued a consistant and strong insistance on protectionist economics which obviously disturbs the free trade orientated libertarian left. Trump's deficit spending, in keeping with his idolism of President Ronald Reagan too goes against the low government spending which almost all Libertarians take for granted as part of libertarian economic values.
In conclusion, Donald Trump has been a refreshing turn away from Government power as embraced by his predecessor Barack Obama and his successor Joe Biden, however some inconsistancies in his broadly small government stance created unease in the more economically orientated libertarian.
