Terry Richard Hurst is the 2017 Libertarian Party of Virginia (LPVA) nominee for Virginia State Delegate, 89th District in Norfolk, Virginia. He joined the National Libertarian Party (LP) and the LPVA in October 2016 after volunteering for the Gary Johnson 2016 presidential campaign. He joined the regional affiliate Tidewater Libertarian Party (TLP) in November shortly after the election. On December 14, 2016, he received the Virginia State Board of Elections acceptance of his Statement of Organization, forming the candidate committee Terry Hurst for Delegate. He received the LPVA 3rd Congressional District nomination for the 89th District on April 15, 2017.

Biography

Early Life

Terry was born and raised in northern Wisconsin (Superior and Lake Nebagamon, respectively), and joined the US Navy after graduating in 1986 from Northwestern High School in Maple, Wisconsin. A member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Terry earned a Navy Expeditionary Medal during a 16-month deployment (November 1986-March 1988) as a Stinger anti-terrorist/anti-aircraft missile gunner on 10 different ships that took him to the North Atlantic, Mediterranean and Persian Gulf. Upon returning stateside in 1988, he completed Basic Journalism training at Defense Information School (DINFOS) Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indianapolis, and was stationed in Norfolk later that year.

Current Life

Terry lives in Norfolk with his wife Evelyn. Their six children attended Norfolk Public Schools, the four oldest going on to attend Virginia colleges and universities and the two youngest now nearing graduation at Granby High School in Norfolk. He coached and managed their baseball teams at Azalea Little League and was also PTA Treasurer at Sherwood Forest Elementary school.

Terry is a Director of Data Management and Analytics with a behavioral healthcare company, working on federal contracts with the military’s employee assistance programs (EAP).

Education

He is a graduate of Tidewater Community College with an Associate of Social Science degree (magna cum laude), and Old Dominion University with a Bachelor of Psychology degree (Criminal Justice minor).
