The 2020 Libertarian National Convention is the upcoming biannual Libertarian Party National Convention. It will be held in the year 2020, on a date yet to be determined.

Overview

The 2020 Convention will consist of proposals to amend the Libertarian Party bylaws, which are then voted on by convention delegates.

Additionally, convention delegates to the Libertarian National Convention will also nominate a President and Vice President to run on the Libertarian Party ticket for the 2020 United States Presidential election, as well as vote for Board Members of the Libertarian National Committee (LNC).

Delegates are selected by each of the state affiliates of the Libertarian Party.

The event is also expected to include seminars, forums, debates, discussion groups, and an exhibition hall.

Location

The three finalist cities for location are Atlanta, Georgia, Austin, Texas, and Phoenix, Arizona.

Declared

All 'Declared' Candidates have either filed to run with the FEC, made a public announcement declaring their intention to run, or created a promotional page (through social media or a website) declaring their intention to run.

Publicly Expressed Interest

These candidates have publicly stated they are interested in running, but have otherwise made no formal declaration to do so.

  • Zoltan Istvan, 2018 Candidate for Governor of California.[3]
  • Steve Kerbel, businessman, author, and activist. 2016 Candidate for President of the United States.[4]
  • Mary Ruwart, biomedical researcher, author, and activist. 1984 and 2008 Candidate for President, 1992 Candidate for Vice-President.[5]
  • Joy Waymire, ranch foreman from Tulelake, California. 2016 Candidate for President of the United States.[6]
Potential

These candidates have been speculated by multiple sources to be a possible candidate, but have neither confirmed or denied an interest in running:

  • Bill Weld- 68th Governor of Massachusetts, 2016 Libertarian Nominee for Vice President.[7][8][9]
Declined to Run

These candidates have explicitly stated they have no plans of running for President in 2020:

  • Gary Johnson, 29th Governor of New Mexico, 2012 and 2016 Libertarian Nominee for President.[10]
